Sighting
Transcription of the Telegraph article:
The Dubuque Herald states that on the night of the 25th ult., a most singular phenomenon in the shape of a white cloud stretched over that city from a point in the horizon a little south of east to a point almost opposite. Its apparent width was about fifty feet, and when first seen seemed stationary. Through all parts of it the stars were perfectly visible. In a few minutes after it was first observed, a change took place in its appearance; it began to grow thin in parts and a movement towards the Western horizon became visible. It gradually grew very bright. Whatever it was, it was certainly very singular. A similar phenomenon is said to have been witnessed in some of the Eastern States in 1827.
